Treatment of Prostate Cancer is unique to each patient, however options include:
Watchful Waiting
This is for patients with early stage cancer, or where they may not be suitable for more invasive procedures
Active Surveillance
This is where patients are recommended regular appointments with their Surgeons or GP who will monitor growth of any cancers to determine whether further treatment is necessary
Hormonal Therapy
This is often prescribed if a cancer has shown any growth, the therapy aims to slow or stop the cancer from growing.
Chemotherapy
When hormonal therapy is no longer working chemotherapy can take its place. This is the use of anti-cancerous drugs designed to shrink and control the size of the cancer.
Surgery
Prostatectomy is the most common surgical procedure for patients with prostate cancer. This would be performed usually with a robot to ensure microsurgery can be performed to reduce side effects and improve quality of life outcomes for patients.
Radiotherapy
The aim of this is to destroy the cancerous cells through the use of a high energy x-rays whilst still trying to preserve the healthy cells. At Trent Prostate Clinic we have access to advanced radiotherapy techniques which also help improve outcomes for patients including MR Linac for hypo fractionated treatment.
Lutetium PSMA Therapy
This is for patients with advanced stage cancers. It works as a “search and destroy” cancer treatment which uses biological markers to identify tumours, then uses radioactive isotypes to provide doses directly to the markers.
